What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture forms a small part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which dates back as far as 1000 years BC.

Physiotherapists who use acupuncture as part of their treatment plan use a combination of TCM and scientific evidance as a means of reducing pain and inflammation and improving function.

Convenctional acupuncture uses sterile, disposible, single-use needles, which are inserted into the skin at acupuncture points. A number of needles may be used on various parts of the body and may be left in place for up to 30 minutes.

Trigger point acupuncture (also known as dry needling) may also be used as a method to promote relaxation in specific muscles. This form of treatment may last a much shorter length of time and may be used in conjunction with conventional acupuncture.
